Progressive Power Training or “PPT” for short is a year round, on bike strength training program. PPT was created by my mentor the late Bill Edwards who was mentored by USA Cycling Hall of Famers Mike Walden and Chris Charmichael.

Bill created PPT to increase the strength of “only” those muscles that are responsible for pedaling the bike. The results gained from year round PPT workouts far exceed those gained during the off season in the gym performing traditional strength training routines.

The goal of PPT is to increase on bike strength. The strength gained while following PPT protocol is then maintained and increased in some cases throughout the season which is in stark contrast to traditional strength training methods which occur off season, off the bike and in the gym.

Any size and strength gained following PPT protocol is specifically useful for applying more power to the pedals. Regular aerobic and anaerobic work then optimizes newly gained size and strength by densely occupying muscle fibers with the capillaries, mitochondrion and enzymes needed to perform large amounts of work over varying amounts of time.

Size and strength gained as a result of following traditional off season, off bike in the gym workouts increases the size and strength of many muscles which are not needed to pedal with more force. The newly gained size and strength end up slowing a cyclist down. Explosive, cruising and climbing speed all suffer as a result of having to carry extra muscle size that does not contribute to pedaling the bike.

PPT workouts take more priority during the early season base and build training phases. The priority given to PPT workouts as well as the time it takes to complete workouts then becomes abbreviated requiring less time to complete workouts during the competitive season when cyclists want to use their newly gained strength in the form of increased power on the bike.

PPT requires the use of a Computrainer or Velotron ergometer because the workouts are so brief and intense that they cannot be effectively performed on the road. The Computrainer and Velotron allow you to build short courses with profiles that cannot be found on the road. Typically power output is tied closely to terrain and wind resistance. The Computrainer/Velotron force the cyclist to overcome resistance created by a load generator as determined by the course and profile created which creates the intensity needed to make the dramatic strength gains which can be made following PPT workout protocol.
